ABOUT
THE FOUNDATION
Our non-profit
foundation was started in memory of our brother, Jeff Schwebel,
who died in 2001. Jeff had childhood cancer and attended a
wonderful camp, called the One Step at a Time Camp, a camp
for children with cancer and leukemia. Since Jeff
was a former One Step camper and counselor, we decided
to make this camp the sole recipient of our foundation's efforts,
which greatly enhanced Jeff's life and continues to enhance
the lives of the children who attend it.
The One Step at a Time Camp was founded in 1978 and is held
annually every July at the George Williams Campus in Lake
Geneva, Wisconsin. The philosophy of the camp is to provide
a normal childhood experience, such as summer camp, to children
who have cancer or leukemia, as well as those whose treatment
has ended. Jeff attended this camp in 1979 and 1980. Our memory
of that time was Jeff's excitement about being able to actually
go to camp, doing what his peers were doing, yet in an environment
where he felt understood. As a child battling cancer, he loved
that the camp offered him the opportunity to "just be
a kid".
In memory of Jeff, we decided to host an annual golf outing,
The Player Invitational, which honors Jeff's abundant energy
and zest for life while supporting this worthwhile cause.
